Today my family and I attended the 54th Annual Community Restoration Luncheon hosted by KSAT’s Steve Spriester. My baby brother not only received an award, but shared his story to a room full of people. To see him up there, humbled yet confident, words cannot describe how proud of him I was as well as my family. I couldn’t help but tear up. Not only is he an example of how you can turn your life around, but how you can juggle family life, a full-time job, and continue to go all the way with your education. I was truly amazed when he was speaking; everyone in the room was quiet, listening, and amazed as well. As they say, we all have a story…

Keynote speaker and honorable Bexar County Criminal Justice Attorney Nicholas “Nico” LaHood gave his story and testimony prior to the award ceremony. It was interesting listening to a role model of our community tell us about his troubled past and how he as well turned his life around. Mr. LaHood, my brother, and others at the ceremony had taken full advantage of all the programs, support from family and friends, etc. they needed to turn their lives around for the better, achieve goals, and be successful. They are all proof that anyone can do so…if they really want to. My brother received the Graduate of the Year award for demonstrated and sustained success in establishing himself as a valuable community member from Crosspoint. As he walked up to the stage to receive his award, the entire room applauded. It was an experience I will never forget.

Though my brother and I are a lot alike and total opposites, one thing we both have in common is sharing our story with others. That makes me especially proud of him; to hold your head up high when you tell others about your troubled past isn’t easy and takes courage. My brother has shared his story with countless groups and individuals to motivate and inspire them to strive for more and make their lives better. He is truly an example it can be done. People will quickly judge you for your wrong doings, yet remain speechless when you overcome them and reach success. We all make mistakes and bad choices, but we can always correct them. I hope my brother’s story continues to give hope to those that are or were in his past situation so that they may find their way to success and a good life just as he has.
